7/31/2009 - F.E. WARREN AIR FORCE BASE, Wyo. -- Col. Steve Miller was appointed commander for the 90th Security Forces Group here July 16.

He said he couldn't be happier with where he is and what he has seen in his first week at Warren.

"Our welcome in Cheyenne was beyond wonderful, and without a doubt, this is the nicest place I've been," said Colonel Miller.

Before he assumed his position here, Colonel Miller and his family were stationed at Fifth Air Force and U.S. Forces Japan, Yokota Air Base, Tokyo.

"It was kind of like a homecoming; I was born there," Colonel Miller said. "I enjoyed my time there, and my wife and daughter absolutely loved it."

Still, Colonel Miller said he prefers small towns and the simplistic life of Midwestern America. He went to the pancake breakfast during Cheyenne Frontier Days, flipped pancakes and found that CFD was bigger than he thought it would be.

"There were great people, friendly people and fun people," Colonel Miller said.

"To be able to do it was incredible. The breakfast showed the best of what America has to offer. This is what our country is all about: people coming together from all heritages and just enjoying each other's company," he added.

Colonel Miller said he believes that being a leader who anybody can come to without hesitation is vital.

"We, as a higher authority, are naturally intimidating," he said. "When I talk to our junior Airmen, I tell them to relax. I want to get to know them and them to know me. I want to be someone people can count on."

As the new head, Colonel Miller is more than thrilled to be a part of Warren and the 90th SFG.

"The base and the people here are incredible," said Colonel Miller. "My vision for the group is simple, clear and concise."

"We will provide a safe and secure environment at F.E. Warren and of our nation's strategic assets. We'll do that by mastering the basics," he added.

Colonel Miller said he is proud of the 90th SFG because it offers an abundance of opportunities for all Airmen. He is eager to get to know everyone and challenge their potential and character. He has a positive attitude about what he can do and looks forward to being a leader here.

"A leader has to be trusted, and in order to be trusted, you have to earn respect of your followers," said Colonel Miller. "You do that by demonstrating your character every day."
