Airmen from F.E. Warren Air Force Base helped the Cheyenne community honor military members during Cheyenne Frontier Day’s Military Monday at an opening ceremony July 25, at Frontier Park.

More than 100 Airmen and Cheyenne residents worked together to unfurl a massive flag to begin the ceremony.

“I think this is a great moment, Cheyenne and the military community really work well together,” said Senior Airman Samantha Vanvynck, 90th Operations Support Squadron member. “I think this is the first base where I have seen the community reach out to the military community on this level -- it’s amazing.”

As the flag was spread across the grounds, Kori Lance, wife of Lt. Col. Robert Lance, 90th Civil Engineer Squadron commander, sang the national anthem.

“It’s always been a dream of mine to perform at CFD,” Lance said. “I started singing at rodeos in the south and always heard about CFD. I was ecstatic when I was selected to sing, especially for Military Monday.”

Following the national anthem, a group of military working dogs and their handlers walked across Frontier Park, including our very own Eby and Oli, MWDs, and Senior Airmen Desi Padilla and Daniel Smith, 90th Security Forces Squadron MWD handlers.

“This is good coordination with the public,” Smith said. “The dogs aren’t usually recognized for the role they have in the military, so I enjoyed putting them in the spotlight.”

Each branch of the military was represented by a service member carrying their respective flag in a motorcade. Senior Airman Alexis Visser, 90th Munitions Squadron member, waved the Air Force flag during the ceremony.

“I feel very honored to have represented the base and the Air Force,” Visser said.

Military Monday is just one example of the strong bond between Cheyenne and the military, a bond that has been continually cultivated since the founding of the base and city in 1867.

“This brings the community here together with positive energy,” said Brittany Posey, spouse of Senior Airman Eric Posey, 90th Civil Engineer Squadron Explosive Ordnance Disposal Flight member. “We always get a warm welcome no matter where we go in Cheyenne. I think they really appreciate the military, and that’s a good feeling.”
