You never have a second chance to make a first impression. Especially as defenders of our country's freedom, we need to pay attention to how we behave on and off duty.

The Air Force core values of integrity, service before self and excellence in all we do is an excellent guide for the way we are supposed to act as Air Force members.

People look at a military member in a more critical way. They demand and expect more from us since we wear the uniform. We can't let them down. Our behavior always needs to be above reproach.

Most of the time, we are outstanding ambassadors to the community. We volunteer in the community. Many events, especially Cheyenne Frontier Days, couldn't happen without us. I know the community loves having us represent them too, with all the visitors in the area.

But I've seen poor examples of how we act. On the way to work the other day, I accidentally pulled out and cut someone off. The driver (with a military uniform) extended his finger, and I don't think he was saying I was number one. Our paths lead to the same place, and we entered the base around the same time. I followed the individual to the gym were I told him that this behavior was probably not the best way to impress the community.

One display of unprofessional behavior could have ruined someone's entire impression of all Air Force members.

On base we are doing a fantastic job with the people we serve too. Think of the security forces members at the front gate. Despite bearing the cold and the gale force winds, I am impressed every time I enter through the gate when I receive a warm welcome and a "Have a great day Sergeant Kinnick."

Their positive politeness and attitude proves that they understand what it takes to be role models for the people they serve.

At the medical group, we have embraced and instilled the value of ambassadorship to our staff. We have incorporated the many philosophies when dealing with the customers we serve. I see the positive results in the numerous kudos and positive customer feedbacks we receive.

By following these simple steps, any group can make that first impression a lasting one.
I encourage everyone to think before they act and remember the core value of integrity - doing what is right even when no one is looking. You never know when someone will be watching. Make sure you are always a positive representative for the greatest Air Force in the world.
