BSC marks milestone

F.E. WARREN AIR FORCE BASE, Wyo. --  The Biomedical Sciences Corps is one of five officer corps in the Air Force Medical Service. The BCS was created Jan. 28, 1965, by General Curtis LeMay and will hit the milestone of 50 years this year.

The BSC is celebrating their 50th Anniversary from Jan. 26 through Jan. 30. The 90th MDG will be honoring the milestone with various activities scheduled throughout the week.

"It is a milestone because, over the 50 years in the Air Force, we have built and maintained a very strong identity as a corps," said Col. Hans Ritschard, 90th Medical Group commander. "We influence AF operations throughout every wing in the Air Force."

The BSC is made up of 2,400 Air Force officers and 5,800 enlisted technicians and spans 15 different Air Force specialty codes. The Mighty Ninety has eight BSC career fields, including public health, physician assistant, behavior health, pharmacy, optometry and physical therapy.

"We have a unique identity because we are comprised of so many diverse career fields," Ritschard said. "BSC is a diverse group of medical professionals who provide patient care and medical services throughout the wing"

The BSC makes up 21 percent of the active duty officers in the Air Force Medical Services and four percent of the entire Air Force officers.

"This week will highlight the BSC and all the versatility we have in the Med. Group," said Capt. Vanessa MacCormack, 90th MDG Mental Health flight commander.

"The goal of the anniversary week is to recognize the achievements of those in the BSC," said Capt. Jonathan Jones, 90th MDG Flight Medicine physician assistant.

"It is an opportunity to set aside time to honor all BSC officers, and their enlisted counterparts, who are integral to the success of the Air Force Medical Service," Jones said. "Today's military environment demands the best Airmen, and the BSC possesses some of the most highly trained medical experts in the world."

The Biomedical Sciences Corps' mission is to optimize a high performance fighting force and the health of all they serve.
