The New Year is here and so is tax season.

The Warren Tax Center is open through April 16; last year the tax center volunteers processed more than 1,100 returns and are hoping to do the same this year.

This free service is available to all active-duty and retired military members. The 90th Space wing legal Office runs the tax center with assistance from volunteers sponsored by their squadrons and trained through the Internal Revenue Service Volunteer Income Tax Assistance training program.

With many options for military members to use for tax filing, many make the mistake of paying for the service when there are different free options availabe to service members, including the tax center at Warren.

The most important thing to consider when choosing who should file taxes is the familiarity Warren volunteers have in dealing with miltiary member issues.

Basil Heise leads the tax center with seven years experiences as the tax office manager and in dealing with military-specific tax issues.

Regardless of the choice for tax preperation concerns, keep in mind the tax center is meant to serve service members in both preparing the forms and filing taxes electronically.

The tax center is located at 1105 Wyoming, Building 1200, room 119. Hours of operation are 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. weekdays.
