"Best of the Best" Bomber and Missile Wings earn top honors in competition

BARKSDALE AIR FORCE BASE, La. --  A spirited crowd of hundreds of cheering Airmen whooped and hollered in celebration late into Wednesday evening as Air Force Global Strike Command announced the overall winners of the first-ever Global Strike Challenge.

With the Under Secretary of the Air Force, Ms. Erin Conaton, and commanders of two major commands looking on, the revelers capped the months-long bomber, missile and security forces competition with trophy presentations honoring historical events and leaders.

The host, Global Strike Commander Lt. Gen. Frank Klotz, was joined by Air Combat Command Commander Gen. William M. Fraser III, 8th Air Force Commander Maj. Gen. Floyd Carpenter, 20th Air Force Commander Maj. Gen. C. Donald Alston, command chiefs, industry leaders, community leaders and past winners for the culminating event at historic Hoban Hall here Nov. 17.

Bomber, missile and security forces were recognized in the first-ever Global Strike Challenge for superior technical and weapons system expertise in the following award categories:

Fairchild Trophy for Best Bomb Wing: 509th Bomb Wing, Whiteman AFB, Mo.

Blanchard Trophy for Best ICBM Wing: 90th Missile Wing, F.E. Warren AFB, Wyo.

Ellis Giant Sword Trophy for Best Bomber Maintenance: 7th Bomb Wing, Dyess AFB, Texas

Charlie Fire Team Trophy for Best Security Forces: 509th Bomb Wing, Whiteman AFB, Mo.

Best ICBM Operations Trophy: 90th Missile Wing, F.E. Warren AFB, Wyo.

Blackburn Trophy for Best ICBM Maintenance Trophy: 90th Missile Wing, F.E. Warren AFB, Wyo.

Best Bomber Nuclear Load Team Trophy: 5th Bomb Wing, Minot AFB, N.D.

Best Bomber Munitions Maintenance Trophy: 7th Bomb Wing, Dyess AFB, Texas

Best Bomber Crew Chief Trophy: 509th Bomb Wing, Whiteman AFB, Mo.

Best Bomber Conventional Load Team Trophy: 509th Bomb Wing, Whiteman AFB, Mo.

Best ICBM SATCOM Trophy: 91st Missile Wing, Minot AFB, N.D.

Best ICBM Electro-Mechanical Team Trophy: 90th Missile Wing, F.E. Warren AFB, Wyo.

Best ICBM Missile Handling Team Trophy: 341st Missile Wing, Malmstrom AFB, Mont.

Best ICBM Field Maintenance Squadron Trophy: 341st Missile Wing, Malmstrom AFB, Mont.

Best Security Forces Tactics Trophy: 5th Bomb Wing, Minot AFB, N.D.

Best Security Forces Firing Trophy: 509th Bomb Wing, Whiteman AFB, Wyo.

Best Security Forces Endurance Trophy: 341st Missile Wing, Malmstrom AFB, Mont.

Participants included Air Force Global Strike Command's six wings, in addition to units from Air Combat Command, the Air Force Reserves and the Air National Guard.
