Every weekend Outdoor Recreation here hosts trips for Airman and their families to get out and enjoy what the outdoors has to offer. The trips vary in activities, such as camping to hiking, as well as time frames, from day trips to weekend adventures.
Outdoor Recreation hosted a three-day trip to Lake McConaughy, Neb., Aug. 9-11. The trip cost $40 per person and included transportation to the lake, lodging, and access to Jet Skis and a boat.
A group of 11 Airmen and Outdoor Recreation employees participated in the event, and caravanned more than three hours to the camp called Eagle Canyon Hideaway, Neb., which was located on the south side of the lake.
"Friday night we sat out around the bonfire as a group and watched the stars," said Shane Black, an Outdoor Recreation employee who supervised the trip.
The group spent the weekend together riding the Jet Skis and boat out on the lake, fishing, star gazing, and enjoying the luxuries of their cabins, said Black.
Saturday was the main day out on the lake, pushing the Jet Skis to the limits in both speed and towing ability, and cruising around on the boat.
"We taught people how to operate the vehicles and the steps needed to get a license for operating water vehicles," Black said. "We did everything as a group. We taught teamwork through the use of spotters on each Jet Ski when towing someone. We even learned the reason why you should wear sunscreen."
The group ended the day with a bonfire and a home-cooked steak dinner.
"We had a great time," said Kyle Holt. "The steak barbeque was a perfect way to end the day."
Outdoor Recreation ensured this event was an inexpensive way for Airman to get out and meet one another and still have a great time doing something unique, Black said.
"Our biggest objective here is to take more people out on the trips," Holt said. "Outdoor Recreation is striving to get more Airmen out on these trips and showing them that there is more to F.E. Warren Air Force Base, Wyo., than just the dorms. The trips are affordable and fun. Each trip is unique and the more people who experience it, the more trips we get to have."
