When it comes to being in an office all week, people find something they enjoy during their down-time to break away from working behind a desk.

Some people like to read, draw or participate in sports; the list goes on and on.

Here at the 90th Contracting Squadron, two people have a unique hobby: Jay Tobin and Staff Sgt. Jeffery Porter like to build furniture out of Aspen logs.

According to Mr. Tobin and Sergeant Porter, their approach is, "how can we recycle these downed logs and create something that is both fun and functional?"

Mr. Tobin joined the 90th CONS in September 2008, from Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas, where he worked in civil engineering. Sergeant Porter came here from the 1st Special Operations Contracting Squadron located at Hurlburt Field AFB, Fla., in July 2008.

Both men enjoy working with their hands, and say that it is a great mental health break.
"It gives you a real sense of accomplishment after you finish a project and look back at what you've created" Mr. Tobin said.

As soon as they finish with one of their creations they are more than eager to get moving onto their next project. To date, they've manufactured three coat racks with hooks made of Aspen logs and antelope sheds. The most recent project they tackled was a king-size bed made from a dozen Aspen logs.

"Every time you build something, the focus is to make the next one bigger and better," Sergeant Porter said. "It's a learn-as-you-go experience."

Ultimately, everyone needs some sort of release from the stress of the job and the mental toll one's mind can undergo when performing complex contract acquisitions or acquisitions that present short lead times, he said. Even if it means building furniture out of dead trees.
