This time of year, everyone seems to awaken from a deep winter sleep and readies for summer.

This period begins Memorial Day weekend and runs through Labor Day weekend: the famous 101 Critical Days of Summer.

The 101 CDS have been recognized by DoD and the Air Force as a hazardous time of the year for military or civilian members and their families. Unfortunately, this is a time when many of us tend to put safety out of mind.

In reality, it's a time when we must make safety awareness a part of our everyday lives, both on and off the job.

If you plan on taking a vacation, always allow yourself plenty of time to arrive safely; fatigue is a major cause of highway accidents.

Get enough rest before you leave, don't start a long-distance drive after you've just completed a full duty day, and plan your travel to accommodate frequent rest stops.

Constantly assess activities and take steps to ensure your work and play environments are free of obvious hazards.

Before playing sports, prepare by stretching your muscles and slowly raising your heart rate.

For lawn work, use common sense. Wear closed-toe shoes and read the owners manual of an unfamiliar, new machine.

Summer events and social gatherings often lead to alcohol use that affects behavior and judgment. If indulging in alcohol beverages, be responsible and don't drive intoxicated. Appoint a designated driver before you go out.

Supervisors and commanders must take time to stress safety to their troops.

Ensure each member is aware of the increased risks associated with the 101 CDS. Additionally, every one of us can make a difference.

Be a good wingman and watch out for your friends and co-workers.

No matter what you plan to do this summer, your wing safety office encourages you to prepare for this high-risk season.

Don't let inattention, speeding, alcohol, fatigue or failure to use seat belts ruin your summer. Have fun and be safe.
