School may be out, but is work just beginning

As summer approaches, most students have only one thing on their mind -- summer vacation.

Yes, leisure full of summer fun is ideal. Well, school may soon be out, but for many high school and college students, the work is just beginning.

Summer vacation often brings the responsibility of finding a job to earn extra income. Some students merely want spending cash. Others need the funds to help pay for college or future expenses.

Regardless of the reason, many high school and college students seek summer employment.

A student summer hire program has taken place at Warren for the past several years. Every year, base leadership determines the availability of funds to support the summer hire program.

This summer, once again, the base is offering students the opportunity to earn extra money and gain valuable work experience to enhance their future employment opportunities.

The summer hire program provides students, both high school and college, with fun, well-paying summer jobs that teach work ethic and provide knowledge and skills applicable to future employment.

The program also serves as a valuable asset to managers providing much needed assistance during a period of military rotations, employee vacations, and more.

With the addition of the students comes added responsibility. Unfortunately, not all students come to work possessing the values expected -- positive attitude, punctuality, honesty, neatness, strong work ethic and others.

Supervisors and managers gain from the work being accomplished by the students, but the students stand to gain much more from working for them.

Supervisors are charged not only with training and directing work, but with communicating what is expected and instilling the importance of these values in the workplace.

They accomplish all of this by being positive role models while encouraging and reinforcing these values in the students.

This year, we will have students in various offices on the base providing administrative assistance as well as general laborers working outdoors doing mostly physical labor.

Students in the Warren summer hire program make above average wages, work full-time during normal business hours and enjoy paid holidays.

One of the best motivators for these students is when you take your time to let them know their hard work is appreciated.
