As the 2016 Rio Olympics unfold in Brazil, another competition emerges, not made up of Olympians, but of Mighty Ninety Airmen and their families.

The 90th Force Support Squadron hosted the annual Frontiercade here, Aug. 19, bringing the base together for some friendly competition before the start of the new school year.

“Frontiercade is good just to have a day off,” said Chief Master Sgt. James Clark, 90th Civil Engineer Squadron superintendent. “The base works hard all year long, especially during Cheyenne Frontier Days. For civil engineering, the summertime brings a lot of work, so it’s good to come out, work together as a team, eat lunch and just have some fun.”

Events ranged from soccer to archery and also included a base favorite, the buffalo-chip toss.

“This is my first time competing in archery,” said Tech. Sgt. Sean Cloherty, 90th Medical Operations Squadron flight and operational technician. “There are some pretty good shooters here with some nice bows and more experience than me, but I’m doing pretty well.”

Rank had no place in the competition; from the newest Airman Basic to the highest ranking officer on the field, it was anyone’s game. Ultimately, the 90th Civil Engineer Squadron won the large unit award, and the 90th Security Support Squadron won for small unit.

“It’s really not about winning, it’s about coming together as a team,” said Lt. Col. Chris Lance, 90th Civil Engineer Squadron commander. “We won and that’s awesome, but it’s more important that we have the base community out having a good time together.”
