F.E. WARREN AIR FORCE BASE, Wyo. -- In August 2021, I received my orders to come to F.E. Warren. The first thing I did was look up a map to see where Wyoming is located, because I had forgotten about the state altogether.
Now I have been in the state for about eight months and I feel like I am only beginning to understand how much this part of the country has to offer. Not only is Wyoming filled with rich history of the old west, home to diverse wildlife and land formations and home to the first national park, there are also six other states that border Wyoming with many of their own attractions to explore.
I had the opportunity to visit one of Cheyenne’s local attractions, the Terry Bison Ranch.
As soon as I pulled into the ranch, I could tell they were trying to give their customers a great experience. The front of the buildings are decorated to look like the old west, and there is a general store and an old west themed restaurant. I parked my car by the general store, which put me in the perfect spot to walk around and see everything.
The ranch has many activities for guests of all age groups to take part in. While I was there I walked around and saw the many animals they have. I saw horses, an ostrich and chickens, as well as turkeys and peacocks that were roaming the area. There is also a catwalk to where I got to look down on goats, donkeys, llamas, and a few more horses and cows.
After walking around and seeing the animals, I decided to take a train ride to see some bison. I paid $20 for my ticket in the general store, and then I walked to the train stop and hopped on the passenger train. The train was about an hour ride, and in the middle we stopped in the bison pasture where we could hand feed the bison some treats and kiss them. Some bison scooped the treats right out of my hand and some opened their mouths and waited for me to drop the treats in. Feeding them and petting them was so exciting, they were gentle and so adorable. The rest of the train ride the guide told us about the ranch and Wyoming history, while telling jokes.
Some of the other activities the ranch has to offer were horseback tours, fishing, a summer rodeo and pony rides. It seems like there is something for every age group to enjoy. Personally, I cannot wait to take another trip back to Terry Bison Ranch to participate in more of their activities.
Every assignment is what you make it, and Wyoming has the potential to be great. There are so many things I cannot wait to see and visit in this state and the states next door. Try and get out and visit Terry Bison Ranch this weekend or just go explore!
