It’s no secret that Wyoming has severe weather conditions and intense winters. It’s important that Mighty Ninety Airmen and families are well prepared for any extreme weather in the upcoming seasons.

Winter storms can come quickly and without warning, so it’s imperative to have the proper vehicle preparations for any conditions Airmen may encounter. According to the Air Force Be Ready website, 70 percent of winter deaths related to snow and ice occur in automobiles.

“Prepare your vehicle,” said Tech. Sgt. Leegale Irving, 90th Missile Wing Safety NCO in charge. “Change the tires, inspect the brake lines and make sure your heat actually works.”

Some of the driving threats include icy roads, snow storms and high winds, said Irving. He also stressed that it’s never ok to text while driving, especially under these conditions.

The 90th Civil Engineer Squadron emergency management section has created a list of items to keep in a car kit:

1. Blankets, gloves, warm clothes

2. Cell phone and car charger

3. Non-perishable food items (energy bars and canned goods)

4. Maps

5. Jumper cables

6. Water

7. Basic tool kit (pliers, wrench, screwdriver)

8. Shovel

9. Flashlight with extra batteries

10. Ice scraper

11. Radio (battery or hand-cranked)

Airmen and families looking to partake in winter activities, like snowboarding or skiing, are encouraged to have a plan, said Senior Airman McKenzie Williams, 90th CES emergency management.

Williams also suggested that when traveling, check weather forecasts before and throughout the trip to ensure adequate preparation for any unforeseen weather changes.

The Be Ready website also has tips on how to prepare your home before a winter storm:

•             Ensure walls and attics are properly insulated

•             Caulk and weather-strip doors and windows

•             Install storm windows or cover windows with plastic from the inside

•             Acquire safe emergency heating equipment

•             Install and check smoke and carbon dioxide detectors

Another threat this season is pronghorns, as they begin to breed mid-September and may walk into the street more than usual; in rare instances, they may also charge at vehicles, said Irving.

“Just continue to be aware of your surroundings and pay extra attention,” said Irving.

The Air Force Be Ready website, www.beready.af.mil, has even more tips to prepare for emergencies such as major accidents, active-shooters, home fires and other incidents. The site also has interactive resources to teach children about preparation.

Additionally, there is also an Air Force Be Ready app available for smart phone products. For updates on weather conditions affecting the base, make sure to check the official 90th Missile Wing Facebook page and Twitter: @90thMissileWing.
